Scheduled to visit a village soon that was largely dependent on mining. In 2011, Goa exported 43 million tonnes of cargo (Source: GMOEA website). This village was no different. Closer to the mining belt in Bicholim, Iron Ore mining was booming. An entire eco system thrived – with trucks and other heavy machinery, garages and workshops, drivers, cleaners, security, their families, restaurants, and the mine owners.

Move over to 2014. Yes, there is no mining dust on the roads, but the investments depreciate rapidly, and sources of livelihood are inadequate. Most families are in the middle of a financial crisis. Dependent on mining for decades, perhaps the first step to be taken is learning new skills. More on this topic soon.
